Geraldine New, 82, lived in Kent

Geraldine A. (Thompson) New, 82, of Kent, died Jan. 7, 2013, at Danbury Hospital. She was the widow of James W. New, to whom she was married for 52 years.

Mrs. New was born June 28, 1930, in New York City, daughter of the late Gerald Thompson and Hazel (Thomas) Thompson. She was a graduate of Isaac Young High School in New Rochelle, N.Y.

She moved to White Plains, N.Y., where she and her husband raised six children and she worked for the White Plains Board of Education.

Upon her retirement Mrs. New and her husband retired to Kent in 1991.

She became active in her community and her church.

She loved being a CCD teacher at Sacred Heart Church in Kent. She also volunteered at New Milford Hospital and the Kent Community Thrift Store.

Mrs. New enjoyed her Red Hat Ladies Group and her art group in Kent. Her hobbies included art, quilting, painting, gardening and she was an avid reader. She loved watching the New York Giants and UConn's women's basketball team. But above all, she loved her family.

Mrs. New is survived by three sons, James W. New, and his wife, Luann, of White Plains, Gerald T. New, and his wife, Tricia, of Brewster, N.Y., and William J. New, of New Fairfield; two daughters, Mary K. Stockel, and her husband, Irwin, of White Plains, and Veronica A. Rehders, and her husband, Neil, of Sherman; a son-in-law, John Varachi, of North Salem, N.Y.; 17 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Eileen P. Varachi.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held today (Friday) at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church on Route 341 in Kent. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, N.Y.

Friends may call Jan10 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge S.t, New Milford.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 825 Brook St, 1-91 Tech Center, Rocky Hill, CT 06067-3045.
