Knowledge of the geographic world well beyond the borders of New Milford and the state of Connecticut helped Schaghticoke Middle School seventh-grade student Nick Edwards claim honors Jan. 4 in his school's edition of the National Geographic geography bee.

The champion outlasted runnerup James Lewis, a fellow seventh-grader, and eight other boys in an all-male finals staged before many of their classmates and school faculty.

In doing so, Nick succeeds Jarod Riedl, who won the title last year after earnign second place as a seventh-grade student.

The spirited competition was moderated by Schaghticoke faculty member Rob Hibbard and directd by library media specialist David Bilmes.

By virtue of his Schaghticoke success, Nick gained the right to challenge himself in qualifying testing in order to participate later in the school year in state competition.
