Drivers who fail to stop for New Milford school buses with their flashing red lights on as they drop off or pick up students are likely to see flashing lights in their rearview mirrors.

New Milford police said they have stepped up enforcement of the law prohibiting drivers, regardless of their direction of travel -- unless on a physically divided highway -- from passing a school bus with its flashing red lights on.

During the last six months, police said, they have ticketed 20 drivers and issued six written warnings.

The primary target area has been Danbury Road (Route 7) between Lanesville Road and Bridge Street. The state-mandated fine is $465.
