Ethel Chase, 91, lived in New Milford

Ethel Mary Beatty Chase, 91, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and New Milford, died Jan. 29, 2012.

She was born Feb. 10 1920, in Sherman, daughter of the late Marshall and Laurena Beatty.

Mrs. Chase was a longtime resident of New Milford and an active member of the community.

She was the town constable for four years, a justice of the peace for six years, a member of the Democratic Town Committee and its secretary for two years, president of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, past commander of the DAV, past auxiliary police captain in the Civil Defense organization and past auxiliary police woman.

Mrs. Chase drove a school bus for 10 years and was manager of the school bus company for two years.

She owned Sweeney's Pub on Railroad Street in New Milford for several years and always cooked meals for all the patrons.

Mrs. Chase spent her summers in Charlestown, N.H., where she loved being with her family sitting at the campfire, doing puzzles and spending time with horses.

She spent her winters in St. Petersburg, where she loved fishing, playing cards, casinos, bike riding, good food and socializing. She was a member of the Seminole Eagles Lodge #4147 in St. Petersburg.

Mrs. Chase's passions ranged from traveling and politics to bowling and bingo.

Mrs. Chase was known to have a wonderful sense of humor and lived life to the fullest.

Mrs. Chase is survived by her companion of 40 years, Harold M. Sterry, of St. Petersburg; three daughters, Clarissa Davis, and her husband, Charles, of St. Petersburg, and Karen Flynn and Diane Foster, and her husband, Glenn, of Charlestown; a son, Sherman Chase of New Milford; a brother, Edward Beatty, of St. Petersburg; two sisters, Margaret Cummings, of New Milford, and Lucille Shanks, of St. Petersburg; and numerous grandchild and great-grand- and great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Everett "Deak" Hansen, of Roxbury; her second husband, Nelson S. Chase, of Kent; a daughter, Susan Hansen; three sons, Edward Hansen, David Hansen and Brian J. Chase; a brother, Marshall Beatty; and two sisters, Virginia Pokrywka and Caroline Chase.

At Mrs. Chase's request, a gathering of friends and family to share fun stories of her humor will be held Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 257 Grove St. in New Milford.
