The Washington Environmental Council has awarded a total of $11,000 to local students through three scholarship and sponsorship programs.

The Mary Anne Erichsen College Scholarship provides qualified college students who major in an environmental field with up to $2,000 to help with tuition, room and board and other educational expenses.

In addition, a summer awards program of up to $1,000 is available for participation in environmentally oriented programs such as Outward Bound.

This year, each recipient of the scholarship received $1,500.

The 2015 Mary Anne Erichsen Scholarship recipients are Catherine Alexander, Emily Alworth, Emily Deanne, Kirby Peters, Hannah Redstone and Joshua Reutzel.

In addition, WEC presented the third annual Environmental Leadership Award in the amount of $500 to Marin Keefe, a senior who has shown exceptional leadership, scholarship and community service in relation to the environment during her time at Shepaug.

This year, the council introduced a new program sponsoring Washington students for a one-week summer camp experience at the Pratt Nature Center in New Milford.

Six students received a sponsorship for a total award of $1,500.

Recipients are Kip Faison, Lane Faison, Claire Kersten, Charlotte Martin, Asia Peck and Sophie Tibbatts.
