When Maya Cointreau was a little girl, her world was filled with books on Buddhism, dolls from Thailand and masks from Nigeria.

They had all come home with her mother when she returned to New Fairfield from her many business trips overseas.

"I was raised Roman Catholic," Mrs. Cointreau said with a smile, "but it wasn't until I went to other kids' houses that I realized not everyone had batiks of Buddist temples on their walls."

These days, she has taken an eclectic blend of spiritual learning and created a cluster of businesses centered around spiritual healing, herbal treatments and natural health.

One of those, Enchanted: A Magical Realm for All Ages, opened in November at 285 Litchfield Road (Route 202) in the Northville district of New Milford.

Among the items fashioned by local Reiki masters are necklaces of turquoise and sterling silver for adults, amber teething rings for toddlers and small totem stones to hold in one's hand and rub.

The counters are graced with amethyst and argonite, crystals and candles. The bookcase shelves bear labels of "books on personal growth" and "inspirational tales."

Essential oils, flower essences and CDs titled "Buddha-Lounge" and "Tibetan Chants for World Peace" are on sale. Music fills the air.

"From my childhood, I came to believe that all spiritual teachings were equal, different ways to help us connect with the best in ourselves and the divine source of energy and love," said the Smith College graduate and mother of two young children.

"The healing for me comes naturally out of that belief," said Mrs. Cointreau, who is also a published author of holistic healing books.

"I used to co-own Hygeia, a holistic health center on Route 7," she said. "That closed three years ago. I opened Enchanted as a place where people could come and feel better and uplifted when they left."

Kathy Lalone, a polarity therapist since 1992, is a regular customer at Enchanted. She met Mrs. Cointreau at Hygeia.

"It's relaxing and calming," Mrs. Lalone said of Enchanted. "There's surprises everywhere you look. It's `ooh' and `ahh.' And it's informative, too."

"You have a question?" she asked. "Maya has an answer."

Enchanted: A Magical Realm for All Ages is at 285 Litchfield Road (Route 202) in New Milford.
