Edward J. Barrett, 83, of Cocoa, Fla., formerly of New Milford, died Feb. 19, 2011, at Parrish Medical Center, Titusville, Fla. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Stuart Barrett and the late Jean Louise Wright Acton Barrett.

Mr. Barrett was born in New Milford Oct. 17, 1927, son of the late John Joseph and Beatrice Bennett Barrett.

He was a veteran of World War ll, serving with the U.S. Navy, and was employed by CL&P for 44 years, retiring in 1991 as a line foreman.

Mr. Barrett was member of the VFW Post 1672 of New Milford, American Legion of New Milford and Titusville, and Elks #2113 of Titusville.

He played softball and baseball in New Milford, Washington and Kent and was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching spring baseball in Florida. When back up north, he enjoyed time with his brother-in-law, Donny Stuart of Bridgewater, watching NASCAR or in the shop telling stories that were enjoyed by all.

Mr. Barrett is survived by a son, Joseph Barrett; stepson Dwayne Acton; stepdaughter Dawn Acton; five grandchildren, Erin Smith, Terry Coolbeth Jr, Josh Coolbeth, Dustin Barrett and Robbie Osuch; and four great-grandchildren, Taylor and Carly, Madison and Mariah. He was predeceased by two daughters, Kathleen Marois and Karen Osuch.

A funeral service will take place today (Friday), Feb. 25, at 11 a.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford. Burial will follow at Center Cemetery in New Milford.
