Donated funds help light up the Green

To the Editor:
We hope you are enjoying the 17 lighted trees on the length of our New Milford Village Green.
The lights were turned on after Thanksgiving and will be turned off at the close of New Year's Day.
The beautiful trees, all Connecticut grown, are part of our New England heritage -- young trees maintaining a tradition.
The tradition of lighted trees set along the full length of the Village Green was begun by Walter Schutte in 1966.
Frank Landig, his former employer at the Village Hardware store, continued this practice in his memory, and it continues today for the 45th year.
The beautiful Connecticut grown white spruce trees for the Village Green were purchased this year from the Allen Hill Farm in Brooklyn, Connecticut.
Many people have told me over the years they make a special detour on their way home from work or shopping to drive by the Green in the evenings to view the trees and lights.
Others make it a special place to visit with their young children and friends from out of town when the snow is softly falling and the trees are all aglow with many multicolored lights.
Some even remember sitting on Canterbury Hill in the late 1960s and early '70s waiting for the light to magically appear in the trees in the Friday evening after Thanksgiving.
Each year, contributions to the Walter Schutte-Frank Landig Memorial Christmas Tree Fund help to keep this tradition alive.
Funds donated to this project pay for the light bulbs and other essentials.
Members of the local United Methodist Men's organization of the New Milford United Methodist Church donate their time and effort to select the trees, set them up, string the wires and the multicolored lights, and take them down.
Funds received and not used for expenses are used by the UMM for local scholarships, mission projects and local community agencies.
Contributions for 2011 can be mailed to the Walter Schutte-Frank Landig Memorial Christmas Tree Fund, attention: New Milford United Methodist Men, 68 Danbury Road, New Milford, CT 06776.
Thank you for your continued support.
