Veteran state legislator Mary Ann Carson will not seek re-election this fall.

Ms. Carson, who has spent more than a decade representing New Fairfield, Sherman, Kent and a part of New Milford in Hartford, said March 25 the decision had been a difficult one.

"It has been an incredible privilege to serve our communities for the past 11 years," Ms. Carson said. "It's also been truly humbling to have earned the trust and respect of residents in our district during my tenure in Hartford."

Ms. Carson was elected to represent the 108th District in 1999.

Mayor Pat Murphy of New Milford said she hopes another resident steps up to the plate and provides leadership for the district.

"The northwest corner has a great group of legislators," the mayor said. "I hope that whoever replaces Ms. Carson can continue that legacy."

Ms. Carson replaced state Rep. Norma Gyle after Ms. Gyle became deputy commissioner of the state Department of Public Health.
