To the Editor:

The New Milford Public Library's adult winter reading program was a resounding success this year.

We are happy to report that in only two months' time 500 patrons read 2,632 books.

Three individuals were lucky enough to win the raffle prizes provided through the generosity of our wonderful FRIENDS of NMPL organization -- an iPad mini, a Kindle Fire and a gift certificate to Barnes & Noble.

The FRIENDS were so generous as to also offer a bonus prize of an additional donation to the library, to be split between purchases of ebooks and regular print if participants were to beat last year's record for reading.

Our patrons took the challenge and beat last year's record by more than 400 books.

While the main purpose of this program is to have fun, it also shows our children that their parents and grandparents read for pleasure as well as for information.

Additionally, it has had the happy effect of reintroducing reading to a number of patrons who had forgotten what a pleasure it can be.

Many thanks to the FRIENDS and to the library staff for all their hard work to make this program happen.

We are fortunate to live in a community that supports programs like this one.

Thank you all.
