Literacy Volunteers on the Green in New Milford has been awarded a grant from the Connecticut Community Foundation.
The foundation awarded the grant of $3,335 to LVG to support its tutor training.
With the funding, Literacy Volunteers will be able to train 30 new tutors and conduct three formal professional development workshops for 60 veteran tutors in order to improve their skills and expand and update their teaching repertoire.
This grant will aid in implementing the tutor training workshops, which are vital tools in the training process.
Pat Landry, a volunteer tutor with Literacy Volunteers, said the training provided her with the information she needed to effectively work with her student.
In addition, the grant will be used for professional development workshops for veteran tutors in the program like Jane Purcell, who has several years tutoring experience.
“Teaching techniques evolve, the available modalities continue to increase in number, and students needs vary greatly,” Purcell said. “I believe that high-quality continuing education is as important for me now as it was when I was new at this.”
