There’s been a lot of buzz about “Beauty and the Beast” in recent weeks, thanks to the release of the 2017 American musical romantic fantasy film directed by Bill Condon that stars Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as Beast.

But the movie’s release has nothing to do with why Schaghticoke Middle School music teacher Diane Taylor selected the musical for this year. The New Milford school presented “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” March 31, April 1 and April 2 at the school.

The 60-minute musical, designed for middle school students, is based on the 1994 Broadway production and Disney’s 1991 animated feature film. The play features classic songs from the Academy Award-winning film score such as “Be Our Guest” and “Belle,” as well as original songs from the 1994 Tony-nominated Broadway musical.

Eighty students participated in the production, with 38 as cast members and 42 as crew members.
