Mrs. Matthews was a longtime resident of Sherman, where she was loved and respected for her participation and leadership in a variety of community organizations and affairs.
For many years, she was an active assistant to her husband, Jim, when he headed up the local chapter of the Boy Scouts of America.
She was a co-founder of the annual Sherman Art Show.
But her first love was always her parish, Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, where she served as a trustee for 20 years.
Mrs. Matthews was a leader of the volunteer effort supporting Holy Trinity's contribution to the well-being of the community, and for many years helped head up the Christmas bazaar.
In 2006, in recognition of her good works at Holy Trinity, she was the recipient of the Saint Augustine Medal of Service bestowed on her by Bishop William E. Lori of the Diocese of Bridgeport.
A memorial Mass will take place Saturday at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity in Sherman Center, followed by burial in North Cemetery. A reception will follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community of the Mother of God of Tenderness, 79 Golden Hill Road, Danbury CT 06811; to Holy Trinity, 15 Route 37 Center, Sherman CT 06784; or to SolAmor Hospice at 4 Oxford Road, Suite E4, Milford CT 06460.
