Beatrice Grail Kearney, 83, of Washington, died July 27, 2010, at home surrounded by family and her attendant, Dilcia Chavez. She was the wife of Pierce M. Kearney for 55 years.

Mrs. Kearney was born July 13, 1927, in New York, daughter of the late Marguerite H. and Nicholas F. Walsh.

She attended the Elizabeth Seton School in Yonkers, N.Y., and The College of Mount St. Vincent and received a B.A. in English in 1949.

Mrs. Kearney worked at Time magazine, and later Newsweek, as a copy editor before her marriage in 1955 to Pierce M. Kearney.

She also worked as a real estate agent, was a docent at The Yale Center for British Art in New Haven and was an avid golfer.

Mrs. Kearney attended the Italian School at Middlebury College in Vermont, was a trustee of The Wykeham Rise School and was active in the Washington Dramalites.

Mrs. Kearney loved and frequently travelled to Ireland and Italy, where she is survived by many friends and acquaintances.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Kearney is survived by a sister, Elizabeth; nieces; a nephew, from her brother, John; seven children, Mara, Grail, Ann, Pierce, Susanna, Alex and Nicholas; and nine grandchildren.

The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.
