Applications are available for the Harris Family Scholarship at the Connecticut Community Foundation.

The scholarship is open to New Milford students pursuing study in an agricultural field in 2017-18.

The scholarship was established by the Harris children and the New Milford Farmland and Forest Preservation Committee from donations given in memory of Vivian and George G. Harris, longtime New Milford farmers and proponents of agriculture.

Sarah Carberry, the oldest of George and Vivian’s six grandchildren, remembers all of the times the public was invited to the family farm for 4-H meetings, Farm-City Day, agricultural events, Farmland Preservation awareness, and the pumpkin patch.

“My grandparents took great joy in hosting area residents on our farm and sharing their love of agriculture,” she said. “They would be ecstatic to know they are helping local students pursue a degree in agriculture.”

As one of the largest college scholarship providers in the region, Connecticut Community Foundation has over 130 scholarship funds to benefit area students.

The Harris Family Scholarship is one of the newest funds at the foundation and this will be the first year it is awarded.

High school seniors or current or returning college students who are New Milford residents and pursuing agricultural studies, are encouraged to apply through the Foundation by the March 15 deadline at www.conncf.org/students/apply-scholarship.
