Connor Wiseman, 15, of New Milford is the recipient of the Medal of Honor with Crossed Palms from the Boy Scouts.
Courtesy of the Wisemans
has achieved something few people have: the receipt of the Boy Scouts Medal of Honor with Crossed Palms, the highest Boy Scout award. Connor, who is the first Connecticut Boy Scout to receive such an honor in many years, was recently presented with the award in recognition of, on Feb. 1, 2009 in Vermont, saving a boy he was seated beside on a ski chairlift from falling. Connor was given the medal by State Sen. Andrew Roraback (R-30th) at a local ceremony. He was later invited to the Boy Scoutsà Connecticut Rivers Council dinner during which the presentation was recreated in front of the approximately 300 people in attendance. After learning Connor has an interest in attending the United States Military Academy at West Point after high school, the dinnerÃs keynote speaker, Rear Admiral Scott Burhoe, president of the Coast Guard Academy and an Eagle Scout, encouraged Connor to check out the Coast Guard Academy. Connor did and subsequently announced he wants to attend the Coast Guard Academy. Since, he and his family attended a private tour of the academy. In addition to the medal of honor, Connor has received a certificate, a citation from the state General Assembly and a proclamation from the governor, all in recognition of saving the boyÃs life. Connor held the boy who had slipped off the chairlift for several minutes until he gained the attention of the ski patrol, who formed a drop catch, and instructed Connor to let the boy drop 20 to 25 feet into the arms of the ski patrol. No one was injured in the incident. Connor is a member of Troop No. 432.
