A plaque in honor of the Underground Railroad will be dedicated to the town of New Milford by Mayor Pat Murphy Thursday, July 12 at 6 p.m.

The ceremony will be held in front of the Lincoln memorial on the New Milford Historical Society property at 6 Aspetuck Ave.

New Milford played an integral role in the Underground Railroad of the 18th and 19th century that allowed runaway slaves to find freedom in the northern states and Canada.

The idea of a sign to commemorate this point of history was conceived and eventually realized by Fran Smith, a longtime resident of New Milford, who first proposed the idea in 2007.

The sign was designed, made and donated by George Pineman of Pineman Sign of New Milford.
