The Maher family of Sherman will hold the sixth annual Huntington's Disease ... A Family Story benefit dinner June 11 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Bantam.

The dinner will be held at the Bantam firehouse at 92 Doyle Road.

Ms. Maher organized the first dinner as part of her senior project at Shepaug Valley High School in Washington in 2006.

Ms. Maher's father, Fred, lost his 14-year battle against Huntington's Disease in 2008.

One in every 10,000 Americans is diagnosed with HD. In addition, another 5,000 children between the ages of 6 months and 18 yeah are diagnosed.

As HD is hereditary, another 250,000 people are at risk of inheriting the disease.

Tickets are $30 for adults and $10 for children under 10, with proceeds to benefit Huntington's Disease research.

In the past five years, the dinner has raised more than $82,000.
