The New Milford homeless shelter is up and running for the winter season.
The scheduled rotation of host churches coordinated by the New Milford Homeless Shelter Coalition:
December: St. Francis Xavier Church's parish center and offices on Elm Street, at the north end of the Village Green;
January: St. John's Episcopal Church on Whittlesey Avenue;
February: First Congregational Church on Main Street;
March: Northville Baptist Church at 9 Little Bear Hill Road.
Check-in time for guests is between 8:30 and 8:45 p.m. nightly.
Last year there was a 50 percent increase in the number of people served from the prior year. Shelter organizers said they expect the same number of people or more this year.
Volunteers are sought to sleep overnight. New volunteers will receive training and are paired with an experienced volunteer the first time when staying overnight.
In addition to volunteers, financial assistance is needed to support the shelter's morning coffee program.
Guests receive a cup of coffee and a muffin at a local downtown business every day.
Last year, the shelter spent $1,000 of its own money to provide the program.
Tax-deductible donations to the coffee program may be mailed to the New Milford Homeless Shelter Coalition, PO Box 1016, New Milford CT 06776.
