An increase is proposed for pay-to-play fees at New Milford High School as part of Superintendent of Schools JeanAnn Paddyfote's proposed 2013-14 budget.
The fee would be raised from $75 to $125 -- a one-time per student fee regardless of how many sports are participated in.
The exceptions would be ice hockey, with a $750 fee, and golf, with a $165 fee.
"Nobody likes the idea of pay-to-play," said high school principal Greg Shugrue, "But it costs about $700,000 to run our athletic program. And, if we have a family in a difficult financial situation, we have mechanisms in place to help."
Athletic Director Lance Pliego noted for the past six to seven years "44 to 45 percent of the student population participates in sports."
