Ray O'Brien was recently elected vice chairman of the New Milford Town Council.

Mr. O'Brien fills the position vacated by fellow Republican Cecilia Buck-Taylor, who will begin her term in the state Legislature in January as state representative for the 67th District, representing New Milford.

"We appreciate Mr. O'Brien filling this role," said Pete Bass, council member and the Republican Town Committee chairman.

Mr. O'Brien is a 25-year member of the Town Council after serving for 10 years on the Board of Selectman before the town's late 1980s charter revision. He will continue to serve as the council's parliamentarian as he fills the vice chairman's role.

Precedent was set for having one council member holding both positions when Robert Gambino was mayor. During Mr. Gambino's term in 2002-03, then Democratic councilman John Lillis filled both roles.

Mr. O'Brien was previously vice chairman of the council in 2003 and 2004.
