Deadlines set for exemptions for vets, active-duty servicemen

Exemption deadlines and filing requirements at the assessor's office in New Milford for veterans, active-duty servicemen and others are as follows:
Veterans: Discharge papers must be on file with the town clerk by Sept. 30.
Active duty servicemen: Signed affidavit submitted to assessor's office by Dec. 31, signed by commanding officer to exempt motor vehicle from the town's grand list; for veteran's exemption, file by Sept. 30 with the assessor's office.
Certification of blindness: Form issued by the State Department of Human Resources filed with assessor's office.
Farm, forest & open space applications: Available at assessor's office and should be filed by Oct. 31. Forester's certification form state must be filed by Oct. 31.
Personal property declarations: Declarations will be mailed to businesses and individuals who have previously filed in the next two weeks. Declarations are available at the assessor's office for new businesses and must be filed by Nov. 2. Failure to file results in a 25 percent penalty against the assessed value of the total personal property.
New commercial vehicles: Used to transport freight for hire applications for exemption available at assessor's office and must be filed by Nov. 2.
