An informational meeting -- "Parents & Taxpayers: Common Core, What You Need to Know" -- hosted by opponents of Common Core State Standards in the schools, was held Sunday, June 1 in Sherman.

The event was organized by Sherman and New Milford parents Cheryl Hill and Denise Bard.

Southbury attorney Deborah G. Stevenson spoke about student rights and Bard, a teacher, was the main presenter.

Some 75 parents, many from New Milford, attended, according to Hill.

"The meeting was to give a better understanding of all aspects of Common Core," Hill said. "It is here in our school districts, though not fully implemented."

Superintendent of School Donald Fiftal of Sherman sent a letter to Sherman parents prior to the meeting expressing his support for Common Core.
