Mother Nature made it a brisk challenge but there were, after all, Christmas carols to be sung.

Hundreds of Greater New Milford-area residents of all ages gathered Dec. 16 amid sub-freezing temperatures at the bandstand on the Village Green to celebrate the holiday season in song.

The event was the 37th annual Carol Sing, initiated with the New Milford Commission on the Arts by New Milford resident Skitch Henderson, then the conductor of the New York Pops.

Henderson died in 2005, but the spirit of the Carol Sing is going strong, still sponsored by the Commission on the Arts.

Members of the New Milford High School chorus, under the direction of Bob Keck, helped lead those on hand in the traditional carols, as well as upbeat holiday songs, and former NMHS band director Al Bayers Jr. was there, too.

For the little ones on hand, a visit from Santa Claus made the evening one to remember.
